Around 700 BC, facing the advancing armies of the Assyrian king Sennacherib, King Hezekiah undertook an extraordinary engineering feat: a tunnel carved through solid bedrock to channel water from the Gihon Spring into the city, safeguarding Jerusalem's water supply during a siege. Scripture records this achievement in 2 Kings 20:20 and 2 Chronicles 32:2–4, 30.

In 1880, a boy wading through the tunnel discovered a Hebrew inscription carved into its wall, near where the tunnel opens into the Pool of Siloam. Written in Paleo-Hebrew script, the inscription does not name Hezekiah but instead commemorates the moment two teams of workers, digging from opposite ends of the winding 1,750-foot passage, heard each other's picks through the rock and met in the middle.
