Around 840 BC, King Mesha of Moab erected a black basalt monument at Dibon, east of the Dead Sea, commemorating his revolt against Israel and his building projects, and crediting his victories to the god Chemosh. Inscribed in the Moabite language using a Phoenician-derived script closely related to Paleo-Hebrew, the thirty-four-line text names the "House of Omri," referring to the dynasty of the Israelite king Omri, and describes events that parallel the account in 2 Kings 3 of Mesha's rebellion against Israel following the death of Ahab. A damaged portion of the inscription has also been read by some scholars as an early extra-biblical reference to the "House of David," though this reading remains debated.

Discovered in 1868 at Dhiban, in modern Jordan, the stone was broken apart by local tribesmen amid competing claims to the antiquity before Western scholars could remove it intact. Fortunately, a paper squeeze impression had already been taken, and along with recovered fragments, it allowed the inscription to be reconstructed. The stele now resides in the Louvre in Paris, and stands as one of the most significant inscriptions ever found relating to the kingdoms of the Hebrew Bible.
